The Power of Kindness: Why it Matters

Kindness can feel small, but it changes everything. At Rise Up, we believe kindness isn’t just being “nice” — it’s the everyday courage to include and show up for one another.

One of our favorite reminders from The Power of Kindness by Piero Ferrucci is:

“Although the feeling of belonging is usually taken to be dependent on the local ties of an individual, maybe the ability to feel part of an ever larger community can be cultivated.”

That’s what Rise Up events are all about — creating spaces where children, families, and neighbors feel welcome. They are free, open to everyone, and designed so you can come as you are. No judgment. No pre-qualifications. Just people coming together to build community.

A wise Chief once shared: “Our tongue is our most powerful weapon.” Words can tear down, but they can also lift up. We want our events to be places where words encourage, heal, and include.

“We are all referees and players in this sport... It is all a question of how kind we want to be.”

That means each of us has a role to play. Volunteers, Elders, youth, newcomers, families — every person matters. When we choose kindness, we choose to include. And kindness is not just about big actions — it can be as simple as paying attention.

“Attention is the medium through which kindness can flow.”

When someone feels noticed and cared for, even for a moment, it can make all the difference.

Why This Matters

We want you to feel safe when you come to a Rise Up event. These gatherings are places where you will be seen, welcomed, and lifted up. Whether you come ready to help or feeling nervous about being in a group setting, here you belong. Here, we see you.

That’s why we host events like The Big Stir and Exploring CQ. They are not just programs — they are practices in kindness. And together, we can build a community where everyone has a place.

Who Should Come?

  • The Big Stir: Perfect for individuals looking for connection, families, youth, home school groups looking for ways to give back, or veterans, and Elders who want to share stories and wisdom. If you want to roll up your sleeves, cook for a cause, volunteer, or simply be part of making a difference — this event is for you. Everyone is welcome to the table!

  • Exploring CQ Concert: Designed for anyone curious about culture, reconciliation, and building stronger connections. Individuals, families, students, teachers, service providers, newcomers, seniors, and Elders will all feel right at home. Everyone is invited to share stories and perspectives through music and dialogue. Everyone has a voice.
